Phobia

Daniel tells me it isn't normal that I check my bed thoroughly for spiders each night before I get in it.

I don't think most people shake their clothes before putting them on to make sure there are no spiders hidden in the folds.

I know it's weird that I inspect the shower for spiders each morning.

If you see my eyes darting about while I'm talking to you, it's because I honestly do check the walls and ceilings near where I am sitting for spiders.

So perhaps it's true. Perhaps I have a phobia.

Perhaps I do.

  1. I am the same way with Bees.  When Logan was only about 6 months old, I was at a friend's picnic and a bee landed on Logan as I was holding him.  I actually passed him to a stranger next to me.  Can you believe that?  The person was a little shocked too.  :P  Jason tells me that I need to "get over it".  Yeah...I can't.  That is something that is here to stay, unfortunately.

  2. This is pretty funny to me since I just posted about my own "issues" with spiders!  In my opinion you are not weird at all...
I was reading in bed one night as a teen and out of the corner of my eye saw a spider by my shoulder -I check my bed and pillows every night before getting in.  As I was putting on my pants one morning, a spider crawled out of one pant leg -I shake all of my clothes before putting them on.  You will probably remember my story about the spider crawling from the drain as I was in the tub -that happened to me twice now so I always wash the tub before getting in -even to shower!  As for darting eyes, what is really funny is that not only do mine check the walls and ceilings every few minutes but every little while Ashlyn will scan the walls and ceiling and then announce that the "spiders are all gone" (or tell me where to get one!).
Dale is (thankfully) more than willing to get up and kill any offending spider that may happen to emerge.  (Though on occasion I will catch him rolling his eyes at me...)  Then there is the battle with Austin who wants to catch every one of them and take them outside rather than killing them.  That is a whole other story!!

  4. Our shower has had spiders quite often and that was before contruction!!  The scarey thing is not having glasses on, so I would check that before I took them off!
We have two pine trees in the front yard and there is a narrow passage between them.  When people use it everyday it's fine, but when we've been away no one wants to be the first to go through, because they are the one that gets the spider web on them!  It's turned into a big joke about who forgets and goes through it!

  5. Spiders don't bother me much, except the kind I can't recognize.  I once had a pet spider over my bed.  I sat up in my bed and there was this spider hanging from his thread right in front of my face.  So I played with him, named him Henry, and let him live in the corner of my room for a week or so before he disappeared.  (I was 10yrs old).  It's a good thing I don't have trouble with spiders, because I spent a summer living in my dad's basement, and the place was loaded.  One night as I was going to sleep I felt one on my face, so I just brushed it off, rolled over, and fell asleep.  So, do you have the heebie-jeebies yet?  LOL!
Now, I tell ya, I can't handle maggots.  And I used to have a real problem with roaches, until we moved into a house that has outdoor roaches that get in every once in a while.  They still gross me out, but I don't have nightmares anymore.
I didn't get to see the trailer for the movie you were talking about because I have dial-up.  What was the jist of it?  I agree: use medical intervention when intervention is needed.  Intervention is meant to intervene, not replace!

  6. hahaha! Sounds just like me! Although since we've been in the apt I haven't really had any spider problems... its more like the ladybugs: /
Moving stuff is... ehh nothing too exciting right now.  I really can't wait to move, though... Our tentative days are June 10th and 11th (we need two move-in days: )). We don't close on the house until  the 30th and then we'll be painting eeeeverything and putting on the deck.  So things will definately be getting busier after that day!

  7. yeah. i hate spiders. they're awful. one time, when i was prob 10 or so, one was crawling up my leg and i didn't know any better.  .. i was so freaked out, i stood still and could not stop screaming this blood curdling scream that made my mom come running. she was kind of mad b/c nothing was really wrong, but i was truly scared to death. it was horrible. she said it was only a spider and just brush it off, but yuck. rick laughs at me when i have him go and get them. i usually  cna't fall asleep peacefully if i see one around our room. if they're on the floor, i kill em quick as i can. if i have vacuum out, the ones in high places get sucked up. and the shower is the worst when they show up there.  when you said you move the sheets and check the bed, i promptly thought of maria vontrapp in sound of music w/the thunder clapping in the background. you're not weird. spiders...ewww!!!!

  9. Did you see any at my house?
I think you're definitely all weird.

Just kidding, You're not really weird- just cautious.
Overly cautious- about something that can't even hurt you!
    :~)

  10. This is random but I clicked onto your site in my favorite's list (or so I thought) and when the blog came up, it was a brown background and the first thing I saw on the header was "let's break out the shotguns". Ooops. Wrong blog. But for a split second I thought it was yours.
It's a good thing you don't live in the South. Lots of spiders there. And scarey looking ones, too.
Yes. You do have a bit of (okay, alot) unusual fear going on there.  : )

  11. What about scorpions?

Actually, this may be a sign to go on the mission field. There are places where what you are doing is a good habit to have.

  12. I don't shake my clothes, but I do check the shower and walls and ceilings...not just for spiders, but for any kind of bug. Even worse than spiders to me are centipedes...they are disgusting and often move too fast for me to be able to kill them. I can't imagine living in a place where they have more, bigger bugs.

  14. Brietta,
Me to, me too, but i can't sleep unless I know there are no spiders in the corners. Any bugs have to be killed, in my eyes, before sleeping well. If I go in the basement and there is a spider near the stairs on the way up, "HONEY GET A SHOE, I NEED YOU TO KILL SOMETHING!" Oh yes he thinks I am the biggest baby not being able to even walk fast past a HUGE spider. I will stand there and just freak, thinking the worst. "It will surely jump on my bare arm and bite me, making me spider woman." "How much does a spider bite hurt from such a big spider," etc. So you are not alone. I freak out in the spring and summer months. I even hate huge bumble bees. Well I pray Hayla will just not be as afraid and maybe will even help me kill or catch and release some when she gets bigger. I am sorry to say that I think insects, snakes, and spiders are some things that God could have left off the creation list, or did the fall of man bring such things? Oh well we can ask God why in heaven, if we even care by then.

  15. Yik...spiders. I hate all bugs. I used to check my bed every night for spiders at sleep away camp :)

As for AI. You don't like Jordan?! Granted she's not the best of the best as far as singing, but I think she has so much personality. Melinda hands down deserves to win though. And yes, last season was sooo much better.

how are you feeling? Are you on strict bed rest?

  17. =)  I love you, Brietta!  You sound a lot like Eric's Dad.  He has actually blown holes in his front porch trying to shoot a spider!  Please don't ever get to that point!
Also, interesting trailer video about pregnancy.  There's so much to learn.  I feel like I've gotta catch up now that grad school is finally coming to an end!  Miss you and your family a TON and can't wait to see you soon!
