The real major problems lie with insurance companies and legal issues. Doctors these days do a lot of what they do based on the fact that they have to be very careful not to land themselves in a lawsuit. When I refused my second gestational diabetes test my doctor was forced to write a documentation on my reasons. Then he was "forced" to recommend I go to see a nutritionalist. When I refused this, he then had to write up another document stating my reasons, etc. All this in order to cover himself in the event that something did go wrong with me and diabetes so that he wouldn't be blamed. If there was no documentation then I could easily sue him and it would be my word against his. Same goes for induction and c-sections. They have to be very careful that they always suggest what they feel is the best solution to provide for the least amount of complcations and to ensure maximum health. The choices they suggest may not alway be right and I am sure there ae doctors out there trying to make the most money off each pregnancy but the majority of doctors truely do care and want to work with the patient. That's why they went to school for so long! The bottom line is, there are so many inducement, drugs, and c-sections because that is what the patient chooses. Just because a doctor suggests something does not mean that a patient has to go along with it. But the usual response is to trust the doctors judgement. I have slowly learned that I can refuse certain treatments and make other choices independant of my doctors suggestions. It causes him more paper work, but he's here to work for me. Not the other way around. So whlie some of the facts can be alarming, some are just common sense, "Hey, if you don't want drugs, don't use them." The statistic is so high because women generally want drugs during birth and most of the general public views "natural birth" as being outdated. Just make your own choices, your doctor works for YOU! :)
Interesting.....or should I say frightening!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the facts Brietta!
Scary stats!
ReplyDeletePS. The picture of your four kiddos is just awesome. I love Jackson's expression and how he looks like such a big brother. :)
