On vaccinations

This article has some good food for thought on delayed/selective vaccinations for those who want to vaccinate but don't want to go about it on the rapid and heavy-duty schedule most pediatricians mandate suggest. It has pretty straight-forward, helpful information about what you want to avoid and what's OK.

I appreciated reading it, so I thought I would pass it along.

  1. Kinda eerie... I just finished reading this article before coming back to Xanga to check for posts.
The kids new Dr actually suggested this schedule as well as the new one the Autism groups released which recommend starting at 18 Mos. Very interesting and helpful stuff.  We are still debating on the polio and pertussis one though.  Tetanus is a must but the others...  not so much.  Can you belive that our Dr agreed!?  He did say that if our local population gets below 80% vaccinated, that is when you start to see some of the other "old" diseases come back.  So far our area is at about 95%.  If it ever drops below the 80%, they will actually call us and let us know so that we can decide from there.
So much to determine and research!  Thanks for sharing this article -I am going to post it as well.

  2. @StraderMom - Wow!  What a blessing to have such a doctor! My big frustration here in northern NY is how difficult it is to access individual vaccinations.  I do feel like Aubrey will need the pertussis vaccination at some point (though I am praying for a creative miracle-- a new heart!-- for her before she reaches age 2) because of her higher risk status, but I want it separate.  Most doctors in our area don't accommodate such requests because so few people go that route.  Dr. M actually told me that she would (theoretically) order separately for me if she had enough patients requesting individual vaccines, but the reality is that since she can only order in larger quantities and she doesn't have many requests for individual vaccines, I'll have to look elsewhere.*sigh*

  4. I read the article, and I agree, and am happy to see something for those of us who didn't know what to do.  However, I feel guilty that I have not followed through on the less vaccinations for my children.  Currently, they have received everything that the dr.s offer (push on you).    I plan to hold off on the rest of the vaccinations for my almost 1 year old, but the work has been done and complete on the other 2.  I'm mad at myself for not having the gut and the research to know how to handle it all before I faced the doctors.  I pray that other moms don't have to go through that.

  5. @Reborn4Him - Don't feel guilty.  We parents do the best that we can with the knowledge and grace we have; God's grace takes care of the rest.   I'm so thankful for this, as I know there is much I don't understand, know, or foresee that He does.  It is ultimately Him who holds our children in the palm of His hands.  Rest in that!

  6. Thanks so much for posting this article!  It really gets you thinking.  I got the packaging slip from our doctor on the DTaP vaccination (they gave me funny looks when I went in to pick it up!) and it does not contain Thermasol.  It says that it is not a "whole cell" vaccination but it is DAPTACEL (Diptheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis) which it reports to have less "adverse reactions"  than the whole cell DTP vaccine.  However, the "Data From Post-Marketing Experience" section is nerve racking.  It says they were unable to keep track of how many reports of each occurred but that cyanosis (blue color to the skin), nausea, diarrhea, injection site pain, rash, nodules, site masses, cellulitis, site abscess, hypersensitivity, edema, convulsions, and obessesive screaming have all been reported after being vaccinated. YEEK!  Then part of me thinks, "Well, there's probably adverse reactions like these with just about everything.  Maybe even the baby Motrin you just gave her for her teething." (which I plan on checking out the box label once she gets up from her nap)  But then the other part of me says - maybe we should just wait one more year.  I have yet to really sit down and discuss it in depth with Eric.  I plan on trusting his wisdom and trust trust trusting the Lord!  CRAZY!  We have 1 week till her appointment!
Also, when I asked the doctor about the possibility of getting the shots separately, he said it would be too expensive and he would have to order from a smaller company that he does not trust nearly as well as he does the company he gets the DTaP from.  I kinda saw that sort of response coming!  I'll keep you posted on how her check up goes.
