Little by Little

Kids' toys and books are sorted through. Half a garbage bag of things to be thrown away, a small pile of things to be donated to the nursery, and shelves that are all re-organized and re-arranged.

Laundry room is half emptied. Spring/fall coats were relocated, rags and old shopping bags and work clothes were sorted out and at least half were thrown away, and broken beach toys were separated from unbroken beach toys. Daniel's tools need a new home and I need to go through my pile of laundry detergents/stain removers, which is a rather ridiculously large collection since the only laundry products I use at this point are Oxi Clean spray and Charlie's Soap.

Guest room closet is partially re-organized. I've used cardboard boxes to store children's outgrown (or not-yet-grown-into, depending on how you look at things) clothing due to a bad experience storing crib bedding in a plastic tote, but the cardboard boxes are getting really hard to work with since they're all caving in at this point. I'm about ready to bite the bullet and buy about 12 large totes in order to get maximum stacking ability. Anybody have any favorite sizes for clothing storage that they want to share?

Two kitchen cupboards are re-organized. And I am reminded of how wonderful it will be when we delve into the kitchen remodel and I can finally get double-decker lazy susans in the corner cupboards. When I imagine the joy I will derive from no longer having to crawl almost entirely inside the cupboard in order to get the waffle iron out from the very back, I can't help but smile.

That's my progress so far. Next on the agenda: re-organize art supplies, carve out a temporary space for school supplies (the living room getting finished in the next couple months will totally alter my storage options), and go through all stored clothing to make sure I only have what I really need (or absolutely can't part with because I love it so much).

But first, our final little birthday celebration for Bronwyn tomorrow night.

Then back to my spring cleaning in the fall.

  1. I use the large totes, have for years, and have never had a problem. Happy organizing!

  2. Brietta, I own a total of 6 different kinds/brands of totes at this point and the llarge totes shown in your link are by far my favorite.   They have a bit of give which has made them far more durable than the ones with the more flat lids and they really do stack nicely.  (Three of my other totes have cracked or had the lids warp almost too much to use, but the basic, classic rubbermaids don't even show any wear.)The design hasn't changed much, so my mom has ones that are nearly 15 years old and they are still in great shape. (And that's saying a lot since not much lasts long around the farm!)I doubt you have a Gabriel Brothers nearby, but I got my large rubbermaids there for 2 for $7!!  Sarah said they had them again last week for 2 for $8, I think, which is just an unbeatable price.  (I think gladware is almost that much!)I have a mammoth list of things I want to accomplish in the next 2 weeks before we dive into school and it includes a lot of organizing but it just seems like a fruitless project without a basement or attic to put everything away in once I'm done sorting, so I think we'll be doing more giving/throwing away than anything... That and ebay.  Blah.  I'm so over ebay and I have SO much to list that it would be irresponsible to just give it all away considering the needs we have right now.Anyhow, I'm glad you had a relaxing vacation, but I'm enjoying your updates now that you're home!
