Labor Day

Yesterday we said no to routine, school, house projects, and other various duties and took off to the adirondacks for a fun family outing. We've done bits of hiking here and there with the kids and they love it; we thought we'd try their first mountain.

Azure it was.

We had a great time!

I didn't take any pictures on the way up or down-- my hands were a bit preoccupied with kids and stuff-- but here are the ones we took at the top:

Aubrey rode on Daniel's back up and down, but apparently she hadn't had enough of him because she sat on his lap almost the entire time we were at the top

Daniel took the 2 big kids up the fire tower for a truly amazing view

  1. We did this same thing in 2002.  Only it was just me and Chris going up Azure mountain although later  I did find out I was pregnant with Joshua!!  Since moving here we climbed a similar mountain with the kids in 2004 I think.  Caleb, like Aubrey, was strapped to Chris' back and Josh walked the whole thing!!  He was only 2 or so and I couldn't believe it.  He walked up and down without being carried!  Since Josiah has been born we have not done this mostly because Josiah is so adventurous I'm afraid he'd walk right off the top!!

  3. I don't know if I have ever really climbed a mountain.
I don't even feel guilty or left out.
Not to say it isn't in our future (with all these children + being close to the Adirondacks)...
But what I was GOING to say is that I feel VERY pregnant all of a sudden and hats off to you for being "up for" such a fun time!
It was the perfect day (weather-wise) for such a hike.
P.S. You do realize that Eric usually only joins us for the activities that involve motors, right? Just sayin'...

  4. That looks SO fun. We'll have to do that on an Alaska mountain at some point. And you look great. You look like you're carrying small...you're about the size I was...atleast from what I can tell.

  6. You hike while pregnant?!??! ;) I'm not sure at 34 weeks my large body could even climb a small grade let alone a mountain. REALLY. I get so big that doing simple things like putting on shoes, picking up toys, etc. become problematic for my growing belly!

  8. @LisaMCriscitello - It's hit me in the past week, too:  Woah, I'm pregnant and I can't move like I used to!@sarah_purcell - Word of warning: when they say "moderate" on the trails, they mean it.  In hindsight, we probably should have started the kids with something easy.  Gabriel & Bronwyn had no problem with the steep hike, but it was tougher on Jack.  Otherwise, go for it!  We had so much fun!@michelleross - It's not like I do this regularly, Shell!  But, actually, it left me feeling really good!

  9. I remember hiking Azure a couple times in college...though I think it was at night both times, and I didn't have children tagging along, and I certainly wasn't 34 weeks pregnant :). I must say, it seems like a daunting prospect, but it looks like you all had a great time.  Makes me wish Wisconsin had mountain :(.
