Little things I love

:: Pilot precise rolling ball pens. Strictly reserved for writing in my journal. I just might freak out if I find you using any of my special pens for something less worthy.

:: a rule I learned as a child and have since passed on to my own children: Don't Get the Next Thing Out Until the Last Thing is Put Away. Total life saver.

:: Orbit wintermint gum. Yum.

:: Hand lotion-- preferably Curel, but any kind will do in a pinch. I use it all. day. long during these dry winter months.

:: candles. Everywhere. Glowing on dark evenings. Making our spirits a bit warmer and brighter. (Gotta love $1 jar candles that allow such luxuries.)

:: our colorful klean kanteens. No more washing hundreds of cups each day as the kids keep hydrated.

:: the smiles on little faces as I serve them hot chocolate after winter outdoor playtime. Does it get any easier to make a kid's day than that???

  1. I feel the same way about my sewing shears.  Don't you dare get caught cutting paper with them!

  2. Love it all!
About those Klean Kanteens - do you feel secure that all the lid parts come clean inside and out? That is the only thing that makes me hesitate to buy that kind of bottle.

  3. @Slatemaster - I have the loop cap, which is a cinch to clean.  The kids have the sports caps and I've not had any problems keeping them clean either.  The one sippy cap we have is great in that it's the Avent style (every single bit comes apart so everything can be washed separately), but we have had problems with the actual plastic ring that screws down around the sippy cracking when the sippy is thrown on the ground (which happens).  Klean Kanteen has replaced that piece for us with no problems, but it's still a pain, so I wouldn't recommend getting the kanteens until the user is past the age that will try to shake water out onto the ground (which can be done with the sports cap).   Daniel and I have the 27oz size which is narrow enough to fit in our car cup holders, but still holds quite a bit.  The kids have the 12oz size, which is a great size for smaller hands.P.S. If you google klean kanteen, you can usually find them for sale elsewhere at a better price!

  4. Ahh!  Love it!  Simple yet profound.  This has made me think about things that I love.  I need to make time for them.

  5. I'm with you on the hand lotion, hot chocolate, pens for certain things, and candles. Although, I don't burn candles much anymore. I will have to watch for sales on the Klean Kanteens but for now our walmart nock-offs will have to do.

  6. Thanks for the cute post Brietta! And by the way- I can totally relate to the simple pleasure these "little things" bring! All except for the Klean Kanteens, I'm with Michelle on this one....Wal-Mart nock-offs will have to do!

  7. ok, but i have  a q on your klean kanteens. do your sport caps make a whistling noise or duck call sound or what have you? any type of noise whatsoever? b/c i was really looking fwd to getting one, but now i am a bit disappointed. i thought about the loop cap, but i actually went to l.l. bean in the mall, and purchased it. perhaps it would be different if i ordered them from catalog/website... anyway, i just want to know if they make any noise?...  other than this, i am happy w/all other aspects of it. my kids don't like hot chocolate. i don't blame em. i wasn't a fan when i was their age either. but i think it's funny. nor did i ever like choc. milk (i still don't like the choc milk, but once in awhile, i do enjoy hot chocolate. :)

  8. @Angela - I bought stainless steel water bottles from TJ's and so far I like them alot. I must admit, not everyone has started using theirs so we still have the dilemma of dirty water glasses. But now everyone is expected to wash the glass they use -- eliminates all those glass line-ups.
@Bri -- Amazingly enough, those are all simple things that I love, too!

  9. @darlenes - What did the bottle from TJ's cost? I'd like to purchase a nice one for myself.

  10. @angelwez - I have some of the new sports caps and yes, they whistle!  The little ones (5 and 2) dont seem to have it happen to them but when my 11-yo or I drink using the sport cap, it does whistle and it is louder the harder you drink.  It is annoying but I love that it includes a dust cover for the cap so I still use it and just dont drink hard -doesnt happen then.  That said... I also have the loop, flat and stainless caps in both loop and flat.  My favorite cap for cleanliness is the plastic loop cap.  And a heads up for buying them... watch Amazon.  I got 3 colored bottles (two 12oz and an 18oz) for 27.00 and free shipping!
Love this list Brietta.  Funny that a similar list has been running through my head lately. Mine has included things like one piece toilets that are easy to clean -lol!

  11. LOL!  We have lots in common!  I have my special pens too-and I am VERY protective of them.  I actually hide them from my sweet children! And I LOVE candles--always cinnamon or spice scented.  And I LOVE Curel---especially the ultra-healing stuff in the winter. And we have the same "put that away before you get that out" rule.  I get hives when I go into someone's home who DOESN'T have this rule!!  Yikes! How do they survive??!    Happy New Year to you and your sweet family!Jen

  12. @angelwez - I don't have the sports cap, so I personally don't get any sort of noise when drinking.  Maybe the kids do sometimes and I don't hear-- but I've not noticed it with them, either... though it could just be that they don't drink quite as hard as an adult or older child would.

  13. Great stuff!  I will have to look into that gum and those kanteens.  Your rule about playing with toys is simple yet brilliant!  We will have to try to teach that to Eleora.  Do you find a child Aubrey's age understands that concept? =)  Have fun with those kiddos!

  14. @EJTrelease - Jen, 2-year-olds definitely understand, and although they need a lot of reminding, it is an extremely teachable age because they are like little sponges trying to figure out the world around them!  Gabriel was not yet 3 years old when he was already more picky about making sure toys were put away properly and in a timely fashion than I was!

  15. So I was in TJ Maxx with Gabe for my birthday (we went out) and I saw something similar to this after reading your likes.. the brand/name is OGGI, but they were considerably cheaper than the site you have linked to the Klean ones. I had a gift card and got the kids and I ones. The kids ones were $5 (sippy style) and mine (tall skinny size) was $7??, if I remember correctly, but nothing more. I thought that was good price.

  16. @ReneeOckrin - I've seen some water bottles in TJ's, but the ones I've seen have all been aluminum instead of stainless steel.  Aluminum makes me nervous because of the way it leeches (sp?) stuff into water when it gets warm.  Anyway, great buy!Oh, and yeah, I told someone else (I think) that I would NEVER buy them directly from the manufacturer.  I found ours simply by googling it and browsing various stores that were having sales. Still, I paid more than what you got yours for (I think they were around $10 when all was said and done)... probably because we got them over a year ago before they were the "in" thing!

  17. The OGGI ones I found in TJ's said they were BPA free, and the particular ones I got for the kids are stainless steel, and from what I've read on line they seem pretty legit... Okay that and a simple magnetic test by Gabe that put aside any worries .. I'll admit you had me concerned! And you made me laugh when you said you got them before they were the "in" thing. I have a feeling that's how all the hardcore hikers/campers feel too who have used stainless steel canteens for 30+ years (I only know because Gabe's parents have really old beat up ones), and are wondering why THEY didn't think to make these look pretty with flowers, colors etc.. and sell them and make the big bucks!" Anyways you made me laugh! Couldn't resist the jab.

  18. @ReneeOckrin - Haha! No, no, I wasn't trying to sound all ahead of the game... mostly, I'm just amazed at how EASY it is to find stainless steel water bottles now and how HARD I had to look when I was buying them for the stockings in '08.  I'm sure others have shared that frustration for years-- and it was probably even harder before then!  But it's just funny to me that after I spent probably a good HOUR looking for a decent deal on stainless steel water bottles for the family, I now bump into them every time I'm browsing ANYWHERE!

  19. Wow stockings for 08' that seems FOREVER ago. Have you really had yours that long?? I must be very unobservant (which I kinda thought I wasn't! :) ), or you only just recently within the past few months started toting your around to church etc...I was just poking fun, and mostly too at myself I should say bc when I saw them in TJ's and got them (I thought they were recent as of just a few years ago too), I said to Gabe how cool they were and NEW(er) and he said "my parents have those laying around", and I said NOT these really cool tall skinny ones.. maybe those awkward oddly shaped canteens etc.. and he said "no Renee, the COOL tall skinny ones!""OH"I will give you credit for having the prettier/colorful ones first! I doubt his parents have all those cool designs etc on theirs...
